MOTHS: Honoring Service, Supporting Comrades in Need

Since its establishment in 1927, the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTHS) has been an unwavering force in providing assistance to fellow comrades who have served their country. This esteemed organization, fondly referred to as the MOTHs, was founded in Durban, South Africa, in May 1927 by Charles Alfred Evenden.

The origins of the MOTHs can be traced back to a powerful moment of reflection. In 1927, Evenden watched a war film that featured a striking scene of marching troops adorned with steel helmets, commonly known as "tin hats," and donning mud-stained uniforms while carrying trench equipment. This evocative depiction sparked a profound curiosity within Evenden about the fate of his fellow soldiers—where they were and what they were doing after their military service.

Inspired by these ruminations, Evenden embarked on a mission to establish an organization dedicated to fostering camaraderie and supporting veterans. Thus, the Memorable Order of Tin Hats, or simply MOTH, was born. Since its inception, the MOTHs have remained steadfast in their commitment to honoring the service of veterans and ensuring that no comrade is left behind.

In the province of KwaZulu-Natal, the KZN Parabat Veterans Organization (PVO) finds its home within the esteemed Highway MOTH Shellhole in Hillcrest. This shared space serves as a gathering point for veterans, providing a supportive environment where experiences are shared, stories are heard, and bonds are forged.

The MOTHs stand as a symbol of unity and strength within the veteran community. Through their activities and initiatives, they provide crucial assistance to veterans in need, ensuring their well-being and offering a lifeline of support.
